What factors influence the market price of electricity?

Wholesale electricity prices fluctuate based on demand and supply. Hourly prices are established based on the auction conducted on the previous day.

A combination of factors such as these affect the electricity price sold in the Nordic countries:

  • Demand: how much electricity is used in households, public spaces and industrial manufacturing
  • Supply: how much electricity is offered/produced by power plants
  • Temperature: heating/cooling demand
  • Fuel price: what forms of production are used
  • Amount of water: the amount of rainwater and meltwater
  • Water reserves: There are many hydroelectric power plants in the Nordics. How much hydropower can be produced depends on how much water has been stored for future production. Norway has the largest reserves of water.
  • Transmission capacity: how much electricity can be transmitted across borders

The prices of the Yritys Tunti electricity contract are based on the hourly energy prices on the energy market. You can find both the current daily rates and monthly averages here
