Frequently Asked Questions by companies
How do I choose the most suitable electricity contract for my company?
The choice of a corporate electricity contract is influenced by many factors such as the size of the company, the annual electricity consumption, and at what times of the day your company consumes electricity. You can choose a fixed-price and fixed-term contract, or an open contract based on the market price or based on hourly market prices. An electricity contract can also play an important part in contributing to your company’s sustainability and choosing Fortum’s corporate electricity contract ensures that the electricity you use is emission-free and climate-friendly!
In other words, there are plenty of factors to consider when choosing an electricity contract. Use our helper tool service, a tool that helps you choose the most suitable option for your company quickly and easily.
How do I take my electricity contract through a tendering process?
It is a good idea to tender your electricity contract regularly to ensure that the contract still meets your company’s needs. When comparing contracts between different electricity companies, make sure that the contracts are of similar types. This gives you an accurate image of the prices and terms of the contract. When tendering, pay attention to at least the following information:
The reliability of the electricity company
How suitable the contract type is for your business, e.g., in terms of consumption volumes, the pricing model, contract duration, and origin of electricity.
Whether the form of electricity production is in line with your company’s values, especially if you want to reduce your company’s carbon footprint.
Additional services offered by the electricity company, e.g., tools for monitoring electricity consumption and budgeting.
The price of electricity.
You can find more information on taking your company’s electricity contract through a tendering process here.
How do I get green electricity for my company?
The electricity purchased from Fortum by small and medium-sized enterprises does not cause any CO2 emissions. Carbon dioxide emissions are a major cause of global warming, and carbon dioxide-free electricity therefore helps in the fight against climate change. Emission-free electricity can be produced with hydro, solar, wind, nuclear and geothermal power.
Since 2022, large companies have been able to fulfil their electricity demand with residual load, which includes nuclear and fossil fuel electricity, and the share of renewable electricity that has not been sold through The Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin scheme. All our corporate customers can also choose to buy 100% renewable electricity by choosing Fortum Vihreä, which is produced as a combination of hydro, wind and solar power.
The Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin scheme ensures that electricity may only be sold as renewable energy if it has been issued Guarantees of Origin. The origin of electricity sold to customers in the Fortum Vihreä service is 100% renewable. Even if electricity from different production sources is mixed in the electrical grid, the certificate of origin guarantees that the declared quantity of energy has been produced with renewable sources.

Do you offer your business customers a one-year fixed-price contract model?
Yes we do! The fixed-price Yritys Varma contract can now be chosen from three different options: one, two or three year contract periods. With the new shorter contract of 12 months, you get electricity for the same price for the whole year. The contract is a good fit for companies that want stability and predictability from a fixed-price contract but don't want to commit for more than a year. It is for companies with an annual electricity consumption totalling up to 200 000 kWh. Read more here.
How can I terminate a business electricity contract?
The contract terms of the electricity contract specify the notice period. For example, if the notice period is 6 months, a new contract can start six months after the notice date. A fixed-term contract is valid for the specified period and binds both parties, the seller and the customer.
Why does Yritys Aktiivi have a 6-month notice period?
Longer notice periods and fixed-term contracts have been under discussion due to the unexpected drop in electricity prices, causing debate.
Yritys Aktiivi's electricity procurement takes place through a joint procurement portfolio, where electricity is purchased at market prices for both short and long periods. This stabilizes the contract price. In order to offer stability to Aktiivi customers and publish a monthly updated price forecast for the next 12 months, we purchase the in advance amount of electricity estimated to be needed for the joint procurement portfolio. The notice period for Aktiivi contracts is six months to enable longer-term joint procurement. We also offer other types of contracts with a shorter notice period. Read more about Yritys Aktiivi's notice period and pricing here.

Furthermore, you will be able to check the payment status of invoices, i.e., whether the invoice payment has been received by Fortum.
How can I affect the sum total of my company’s electricity bill?
You can affect your company’s electricity bill by using electricity more efficiently or reducing electricity consumption It is worth checking that the type of contract chosen best meets the needs of your company. Furthermore, different electricity contracts offer different electricity pricing models. Costs can be reduced if your company can utilise night-time electricity, or if you have a market-priced electricity contract, you can reduce costs by moving activities to evenings and weekends.
How can I make sure that my electricity bill does not fluctuate significantly?
You can avoid price fluctuations by choosing a contract with a fixed price for up to three years. By choosing a fixed contract, your electricity price will always be the same. Only the amount of energy you consume will affect your bill.
A market-priced electricity contract has long been an affordable option for companies, but its prices vary from hour to hour. If you are interested in market-priced electricity, but you also want more stable prices, you can use the Hintasuoja price protection service. The service can be used to minimise fluctuations in market prices. After sending us an inquiry, you will receive an offer from us that you can accept, and the price of electricity will be locked to the defined price for a fixed period. Hintasuoja is an additional service available for Yritys Tunti contracts. Read more about the Hintasuoja price protection service.
Why are there differences in the prices of fixed-price contracts offered to businesses and consumers?
Many factors contribute to price differences, such as the pricing model, different contract lengths, different consumption profiles, and different practices and laws.
The price of a 3-year fixed-term contract offered to business customers is usually different from the price of a 2-year contract offered to consumer customers, because price protections are made with a longer protection horizon than for the 2-year contract.
Price differences can also arise from different consumption profiles. Business customers consume electricity mainly during weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., when hourly prices are higher. Consumer customers' consumption is more evenly distributed throughout different hours and days. This is why the cost of a business customer's consumption profile is different.
Why is renewable energy subject to an additional fee?
When you choose the additional service for renewable energy for your electricity contract, we purchase renewable energy origin certificates equivalent to your consumption from electricity producers. The origin of renewable energy is verified through the European Guarantee of Origin certificate system. The certificate ensures that the electricity has been produced using renewable energy sources. Verification is carried out annually by an external auditor for each production facility and time period.
All of Fortum Markets Oy's electricity contracts are origin-verified. When our customer signs an electricity contract with us, we purchase the same amount of guarantees of origin equivalent to the electricity consumption of the customer. This way, the customer can be sure that the amount of electricity corresponding to the company's consumption has been produced without carbon dioxide emissions. All our customers can also add the Fortum Yritys Alkuperä additional service to their electricity contract. In this case, the electricity has been produced from renewable energy, i.e. hydro, wind or solar power.
Since 2022, large companies (annual consumption over 200 000 kWh) have been able to purchase the residual allocation of the electricity production, which includes electricity produced using nuclear power and fossil fuels, as well as the share of renewable electricity production that has not been sold separately as a guarantee of origin.
General questions about electricity
Why does the price of electricity fluctuate?
The price of electricity is affected by weather, water levels, fuel market prices, and many other global factors. During the winter, the market price of electricity was high, but with spring, the prices have come down. The war in Ukraine has pushed up the prices of natural gas and coal, which directly affects the price of electricity. Higher electricity prices in Central Europe are also increasing the price of imported electricity in Finland. The low level of water basins in Sweden and Norway has also contributed to the rise in electricity prices. However, prices in the Nordic countries are significantly lower than in Central and Southern Europe. We have also gotten used to exceptionally low electricity prices during the last ten years.
What does the price of electricity consist of?
The price of electricity consists of three roughly equal parts: electricity, electricity transmission and taxes. The price of electricity is determined based on consumption volumes in c/kWh (cents per kilowatt-hour consumed). Companies can influence electricity costs by reducing consumption, increasing consumption efficiency, and by choosing the best-suited electricity contract. Electricity transmission is always the responsibility of the local transmission company, and consumers cannot affect it. The transmission fee includes a base fee to maintain the electrical grid, as well as a fee for the transmission of electricity used by your company. The transmission fee includes a basic fee for maintaining the electricity grid and a fee for the transfer of the electricity used by your company.
What is the difference between an electricity supplier and an electrical grid?
Your company can buy electricity from its preferred supplier anywhere in Finland. You pay for the electricity used by your company to the electricity supplier of your choice. The transmission of electricity is always the responsibility of the local transmission company, which owns the area’s electrical grid. The transmission company charges your company for the transmission of the electricity you use and the maintenance of the electrical grid in the form of a basic fee. The transmission company cannot be changed.
